Parking Lots May Become Solar Forests
Solar “Trees” could take over existing parking lots in the future, changing the parking lot environment forever. Now, instead of a flat blacktop surface with rolling heat waves coming off of it, we could have a cool shaded pretty walk to the store from the car. Not only would you and your car be protected from the direct sunlight, but the solar panels on top generate enough electricity to run most of the store as well as the EV (electric vehicle) charging stations that will be all the rage here soon. What do you think? Would it be hideous? Could it be pulled off properly to everyones enjoyment and advantage? Check out more on Inhabitat.

I love the idea in concept, but I’ve been to enough mall parking lots to worry about a couple of things:
1. safety… doesn’t the structure holding up the panels offer more places for theives to hide and mug you or whatever?
2. dirty/graffiti… more stuff in parking lots = more things to get nasty and more spots for hoodlums to spray paint regularly.
ok…enough of my naysaying, I love the idea if it could be pulled off. I think every roof of every building should have solar panels… why not the tops of parking garages and parking lots too!
PS. in the pacific northwest this would mean less chance of getting soaked in the winter rain when going from your car to the mall!
